Papers of Ellen Mowrer Miller, 1856-1994.

The papers consist of genealogy and family history materials, correspondence among Ellen Mowrer Miller's family members, a diary by Ellen Mowrer from 1868-1869, an unsigned essay from 1861 concerning the coming of the war between the states, and a ledger (1892-1897) from the church attended by the Miller family. Nineteenth-century farming practices, the activities associated with rural life, and Civil War experiences are well represented in this collection.

Eva D. Wilson was born on August 8, 1905 in Ogden, Iowa. She attended the Iowa State College, graduating in 1927; completed her master's work, as well as a dietetic internship, at the State University of Iowa in 1928; and earned a doctorate in nutrition at the University of Chicago in 1934. Ellen Mowrer, born in Pennsylvania in 1848, moved to Union Township, Boone County, Iowa, in 1856 with her parents and six siblings. In 1879 she married Albert Miller, a veteran of three and one-half years of fighting in the 67th Pennsylvania regiment for the Union in the Civil War. After their marriage, the couple moved into a house built by Albert Miller in Peoples Township in Boone County, earning their livelihood by farming and carpentry work.
